World-tour launch in Taichung
Famous for its lavish musical and visual presentations, Zhang Yimou's opera "Turandot" at Bird's Nest is inaugurating its world tour with a first stop in Taichung on March 27 and 28 at the Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium. Following the Taichung performance, the opera will travel to Japan, Korea, Australia, United States, Italy, France, Germany and eventually arrive at the next Olympic city--London in 2012.
In order to fully convey the sublime beauty and grandeur aura of the opera, arts groups based in Taiwan and Mainland China will be cooperating together. The opera demands over a thousand performers and extensive preparations. Various Taiwanese artistic groups have been invited to participate in this event. In the hope of offering audiences a perfect performance, the "Turandot" production team will arrive in Taiwan to rehearse and communicate with local participants.
This Taiwan performance of the Bird's Nest version of "Turandot" will be conducted by Janos Acs. The musical performances will be done by the orchestra and choir of China National Opera House, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra and other choirs from Taichung area. Princess Turandot's role will be performed by soprano Sun Xiu-wei while Prince Calaf will be performed by Deutsche Oper Berlin lead tenor Warren Wah-lun Mok. Taiwanese performers will also have the chance to be a part of this world-class international performance by auditioning for many minor characters, such as "a Mandarin" or the 20 little monks.
