Egretta garzettats are the City Bird of Taichung City. They are usually found along Lyu Creek, Liou Creek, Mei Creek, Ma-Yuan-Tao Stream, Tuku Stream, Fa-Zih Creek, in Tunghai Universiy, Chung Hsing University, and Dakeng area. The primary habitat of Egretta garzettats is ponds, lakes, and wetlands. They live on fish, frogs, and insects. They are classified as residents, as opposed to summer visitors and vagrants. They have black beak and legs, yellow toes, and white body. They like to live in group, and nest with Cattle Egrets and Black-crowned Night Herons on bamboo, Taiwan acacia, and/or Horsetail Trees. During their reproduction season, some decorative feathers will grow out from their heads, chests, and backs, and come off around fall. The nests of Egretta garzettats are quite simple but rough, made of bamboo, and/or trigs. Male and female Egretta garzettats build nest, hatch eggs, and breed the youth together. They like to make sound. When offended, they will make dry “Ga-Ga” sound when flying. They declared as City Bird of Taichung City for three reasons: their white bodies meaning purity; steady steps, noble disposition, but moving rapidly and cleverly; and elegant flying gesture. |
