Taichung City is also nicknamed cultural city due
to its prosperous cultural and educational activities. In 1976,
an entrepreneur, Yong He donated a parcel of land on Shuangshih
Rd. to build a cultural center. This move established a
milestone of founding cultural centers in Taiwan. Later another
cultural center was built on the location of current cultural
center. In order to distinguish them, the first one was renamed
Wunying Hall. In 1979, the Central Government employed Twelve
Construction Projects, under which each county and city needed
to built a cultural center. This policy initiated the
construction of the current Taichung City Cultural Center, on
No. 600, Yingcai Rd. The construction started in August 1980,
and was completed on November 12, 1983. On January 12th, 2000,
it was reorganized and renamed Taichung City Cultural Affairs
Bureau. However, it is still called Cultural Center widely due
to its function. Cultural Affairs Bureau holds art and cultural
events every month. There are also a library and reading rooms
in the building. The building of the Cultural Affairs Bureau has
large space for exhibition and performance, which can hold up to
2,000 visitors. The wall of its lobby is composed of milky
marble. Natural lights shed from its roof windows. Its outdoor
garden, Meichuan Lanscape Park attracts lots of visitors during
weekends and holidays. By the way, Taichung City Cultural Center
is also a public library. Its eight branch libraries are spread
over the city.
