【Description】
National Taichung Library used to be called Taichung State Library at the very beginning. In March 1946, it was renamed Taiwan Provincial Library at Taichung. And in May 1947, it became part of Education Department of Taiwan Provincial Government. In 1967, a ten-story building together with a multi-purposed annex on its side, i.e., Jhongsing Hall, was built, which is the current building of the library. The construction was finished about six years later on December 1973. In 1976, a Liming branch was built at No. 97, Bo-ai Rd, Nantuen Chiu. In May 1997 and July 1999, it was reassigned to Cultural Department of Taiwan Provincial Government, and Council for Cultural Affairs (CCA) of Executive Yuan, respectively. It was also renamed National Taiching Library when it was reassigned to CCA’s jurisdiction. It has been the largest library in central Taiwan ever since Japanese Colonial Period. It builds up the foundation of Taichung City as a Cultural City, as well as providing a public memory on where citizens begin learning. The founding of Jhongsing Hall filled in the hole of central Taichung lacking stages for performing arts, which largely improved residents’ living quality.
