During
Japanese Colonial Period, Jhao-Shen Lin advocated Nationalism to
demand civil rights of Taiwanese people. In 1914, he organized
“Taiwanese Assimilation Society” in Taipei to pursue the equal
rights as the Japanese citizens, instead of assimilating with
Japan. At that time, Lin was largely considered as a “spiritual
leader” by educated youth. In 1915, Jhao-Shen Lin and his
cousin, Lie-Tang Lin founded Taichung Middle School to demand
the right of education for Taiwanese people, which afterwards
served as the foundation of Taiwan political movement. Jhao-Shen
Lin energetically fight for the establishment of a
representative assembly in order to win the right to self-rule.
Between 1921 and 1934, the assembly movement sent a total of 15
petitions to the Japanese Imperial Assembly. The petition drive
came to an end in 1934.
