Whole sales and retails in
Taichung City have grown rapidly in areas,
including department stores, business districts at
the edge of the city, and re-planned areas. Hence
Taichung City has become the business center of
the central part of Taiwan. The total number of
registered stores composed of whole sales,
retails, and restaurants were 21,808 in 2001,
which altogether accumulated to a value of some
3.6 billion NT dollars. However, the real value is
larger than this since traditional markets,
evening markets and mobile stalls were excluded in
this statistic. Another source shows that the
number of retail stores was, at least 24,979.
