Taichung City is the third largest city in Taiwan. It
is also nicknamed cultural city due to its prosperous
cultural
activities. It is located in West Plain in Taiwan, and
in an east-west oriented rectangular shape. Its mild
spring-like climate lasts all year long. Hence, it is
widely regarded as the best city to live in Taiwan.
Art, culture, and
educational activities are affluent in Taichung City,
such as National Museum of Natural Sciences, National
Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung Park, Jhongcheng Park,
Fengle Sculpture Park, Taichung Metropolitan Park, etc.
There are many streams passing through the city,
including Lyu Creek, Liou Creek, Mei Creek, Ma-Yuan-Tao
Stream, and rivers at the outskirts of the city,
including Fa-Zih Stream, Han Stream, and Tuku Stream.
All these rivers play a function of adjusting the
climate of Taichung City, as well as beautifying the
city. In addition, 13 boulevards decorate the city, and
play the function of parks for people to visit. In
terms of economy, plenty of delicate stores and special
restaurants are located all over the city, which jointly
make Taichung City the center for consumers in central
Taiwan. Many popular economic fashions originate in
Taichung City, such as Black Tea with Foam on the Top.
Night life is also prosperous here. |

【Historical description】
Taichung City was barely developed during the
Ming Dynasty of China (by the late 1600s), when only the
aboriginal Pingpu tribe lived here. In 1710, the Han
people from Mainland China immigrated and lived in
Nantuen, which used to be called Li-Tao-Dian. Taichung
City used to be called Dadun because in 1732 a Cing
Dynasty local Administrative Office was set here;
housing was built along Dadun Street near Taichung
Park. The following developments made it the largest
agricultural and goods exchange center in central
Taiwan. In 1885, Cing Dynasty of China built a wall
around the city, within which was called Taichung
Village afterwards. Two years later when Taiwan became
a province of China, Ming-Chuan Liou suggested locate
the capital of Taiwan in Taichung. During Japanese
Colonial Period, Taichung was rapidly developing. At
this moment, the Japanese government largely and
aggressively constructed city in order to transform it
into a modern city. Construction projects included
clearing rivers, building grid street network, and
constructing the Through-Island Railway on the island.
After WWII, construction and development continued. And
then, Taichung City became the focus of
higher-education, economic development, and culture and
art in central Taiwan. Most of the development is in
the west side of Taichung Railway Station. Recently,
the development has switched from downtown to the New
Civil Affair Center in Shituen Chiu.
