【History】
Mayor Residence used to be dentist Gongyuan’s residence during the Japanese Colonial Period. After World War II when Japanese retreated to Japan, it was handed back to Taichung City Government. It had been used to host mayors of Taichung City since then until the eighth mayor, Wunbo Zeng. After the current mayor Jhih-Ciang Hu stepped on, this building was designated for hosting arts and culture activities. This idea was further detailed in the project entitled Reuse and Management Policies of Mayor Residence. Since then, Mayor Residence has become Home of Arts and Culture since its opening at the beginning of 2004. Each year, it hosts 30 activities for free to promote culture and arts in central Taiwan.
【Characteristic 】
The style of Mayor Residence is a mix of Japanese, and western styles, which is a contemporary architectural style. The main building has two floors, and a simple elevation, above which is a flat roof. The balcony on the second floor has bottle-shaped railings, which is connected to classical column corridors on two sides. At the back of the building are Japanese-style windows. There is also a one-floor wooden building and a garden, built at the same time as the main building. This is the most representative and best conserved of its type in Taichung City.
