【Description】
Wanhe Temple’s Last-name Show can date back to 1825. Starting
from March 23rd, Mazu’s birthday to late May of lunar calendar,
Last-name Show was performed. In 1824, the Second Lady of the
Wanhe Temple joined Mazu and marched to 18 villages. When the
march ended on Mach 20th, the Second Lady seemed enjoying the
tour since invisible power refused its believers to take her
back to Wanhe Temple. In order to know the Second Lady’s will,
a traditional ceremomy was held, from which she asked her
believers to perform a show, later called Last-name Show to
replace the parade. The year after, this yearly Last-name Show
began on March 21 and lasted for two months each time. This
show has continued until now.
【Ceremony】
Wanhe Temple’s Last-name Show bagan on March 21st each and every year. Several families composed of the same last names, living in Nantuen regard it as one of the most significant festivals in their hometown and hence financilly support it every year. The premiere of Last-name Show is Jhang-Jhou show, then Catonese show the day after, ceremony for Mazu’s birthday on the 23rd, and shows named after twelve different last names of the supporting families. This special show largely supported by differnet families is unique in Taiwan, and has formed special local culture. Nowadays, Wanhe Temple’s Last-name Show is important resources for reserachers interested in Mazu and traditional shows. |

| The address of Wanhe Temple is No. 51, Sec. 1, Wanhe Rd., Taichung City, Taiwan.
Drivers from Highway 1 can take Nantuen Exit. Then take Wuchuan W. Rd. toward Downtown Taichung. Then turn right onto Wanhe Rd. Wanhe Temple is located at the intersection of Wanhe Rd. and Wunchang St.
Visitors from Taichung Railway Station can take Renyou Bus Routes 10, 30 or 40, and get off at Nantuen Market. |
