Taichung Art and Technology Professional School was founded by the government of Japanese Colonial government to train lacquerware educators and technicians. Ever since, lacquerware industry was introduced into Taichung City. However, the school closed later. When Japan gave up the sovereignty of Taiwan, GAO-Shan Lai returned to Taiwan after receiving his degree in Japan. He devoted himself in producing lacquerware in Taichung City. In the 1980s, demand for lacquerware decreased, the role of lacquerware transformed from wares into art works, including lacquerware painting, lacquerware arts.
